Statutory Packaging Compliance
Under the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011, every entity importing or packing pre-packaged commodities for sale in India must secure an LMPC Importer Registration Certificate (Rule 27) prior to custom clearance.
Mandatory Declarations on Retail Packaging
The Principal Display Panel (PDP) of any pre-packed item must clearly display:
- Name and complete address of the Manufacturer / Packer / Importer.
- Generic or Common name of the commodity contained in the package.
- Net quantity in standard SI metric units (weight, measure, or number).
- Month and Year of manufacture or import.
- Maximum Retail Price (MRP) inclusive of all taxes, with unit sale price.
- Country of Origin for imported goods.
- Consumer helpline details (Name, Address, Email & Telephone Number).
